The Poverty Factor in The Kite Runner

Poverty in Afghanistan

In The Kite Runner, we see through Khaled Hosseini’s detailed descriptions of the environment, that Afghanistan, specifically Kabul, is a place where there is a lot of poverty. Kabul is not a place like Manhattan with sky scrapers and busy streets; it is instead a place like Haiti with slums and people struggling with life.

How I can relate…

I live in a beautiful country; however, it is overflowing with poverty due to political history and situations that we live in. Afghanistan is one of the poorest nations in the world. Like places such as Haiti, the poverty rate is high and the people often suffer due to lack of food or a house. When I read these scenes that Hosseini depicts, I see a place such as Haiti where some children cannot go to school, and they instead work outside of their homes for low wages. Where education is essential but not commonly found among the people.

Amir’s situation…

Amir is what you can call a middle class citizen of Kabul. Hi father is not rich, but compared to those who surround him, his father is a pretty wealthy man. Hassan and Ali work for Amir and his father, nevertheless, Hassan and Amir, like Baba and Ali are pretty close. They have a brotherly bond that has been around for a while.

Beauty Amidst the Poverty….

We often find beauty in small things and in countries such as Haiti and Afghanistan small things are everywhere. Haiti and Afghanistan are alike in the aspect that poverty is common, yet, within the poverty and around it, we find beauty in the people, culture, and nature. In Haiti, the food and culture are exceptional. With various things to see and explore, one can never know all the sides of the Haitian people and culture. Haiti’s natural landscape alone is marvelous. Our beaches are breathtaking and our mountains are remarkable. It is all about seeing beauty in the face of poverty.
